I would like to invite Year 11 to 13 pupils and staff from St. Bartholomew’s to attend a very special lecture at Downe House School, Cold Ash, Thatcham, on Monday 24th March, 2014

Our guest for the evening will be Mr Terry Waite CBE, an English Quaker and Anglican, humanitarian and author, who was first brought to the public’s attention in the early 1980’s when he successfully negotiated several hostage releases, and who was then subsequently taken hostage himself for an incredible 1,763 days. Mr. Waite will be delivering a lecture about his experiences as a negotiator, as a hostage and covering terrorism on a worldly scale. There will be an opportunity for the audience to have an interactive session after the talk, discussing topics covered. There will also be copies of his latest book ‘Taken on Trust’ for sale and signing.

Mr Waite will also be leading a workshop for a small group of pupils between 5pm and 6pm.

The workshop will be interactive, with emphasis on the application of international political knowledge and should appeal to pupils with a wide range of interest in current affairs and foreign relations. We would be delighted to host two or three pupils from St. Bartholomew’s at the workshop should this be of interest. Please note, there are limited spaces available on the workshop.

They would also be most welcome to then join some of our pupils for an evening meal before the lecture. Please note that Sixth Form students do not need to be accompanied and will be suitably supervised while on site.

There will be no charge for tickets however donations to the Charity would be very welcome. All proceeds from the Medley Series will be donated directly to Hostage UK, a charity clearly close to Mr Waite’s heart.

We are very much looking forward to welcoming Mr Waite to Downe House and do hope you can join us for what is sure to be a fascinating evening!
