Big Voice London – improving diversity in the legal profession

Big Voice London is a social mobility charity, which seeks to engage young people between the age of 16 and 18 with law and legal policy, with the aim of improving diversity in the legal profession.

They are currently taking applications from A-Level students for places at two upcoming online projects, namely:

1. Radcliffe Chambers Student Barrister Experience: 1, 2, 8 and 9 September 2020.

For the third time, Radcliffe Chambers is partnering with Big Voice London on its award-winning work experience programme for Year 12 students. The programme aims to inspire and support young people considering a career in law, in an interactive, friendly and thought provoking environment. Participants will gain insight into the working lives of barristers specialising in business and private wealth disputes, as well as receive practical advice on pursuing a career as a barrister.

The programme is open to Year 12 students. Participants will be state school students, who are eligible for free school meals. The deadline for applications is 7pm on Monday 3rd August 2020.

To apply you will need to complete a brief application form by clicking here.

2. Summer School: Between 6-8pm on 10, 12, 14, 17 and 18 August 2020.

In 2020, for the seventh year running, they are inviting students to take part in our Summer School. This year they will be exploring the effect of the coronavirus on the law.

The students’ task during the course of the Summer School will be to critique the current law’s response to the pandemic and voice their opinion on whether the law needs to be reformed.

During the sessions we will give the students the opportunity to engage with the law and cover this topic through workshops and guest lectures from experts in the area.

The deadline for applications is 7pm on Monday 3rd August 2020.

To apply, your students will need to complete a brief application form by clicking here.

In 2020, due to coronavirus, they will be operating the Radcliffe Chambers Student Barrister Experience and the Summer School projects virtually – there will be no face-to-face in person sessions. They will be accepting applications for these opportunities on a first come, first served basis. All projects are completely free of charge, and all applications remain confidential.

Prepare for HE Mentoring

Study Higher (our regional version of the National Collaborative Outreach Programme) is also providing a mentoring programme for students who meet certain widening participation criteria. The three month project connects final year students with a mentor to help them explore and prepare for their next steps. The project would suit learners expecting to start their HE course in autumn 2020, and final year learners who are unsure whether HE is right for them and need support making decisions about post-18 options. Mentors have been recruited from Brightside’s volunteer network, including working professionals as well as current university students.

Mentors across both programmes hold enhanced DBS checks and receive appropriate training around child protection and safeguarding prior to taking part. Please follow the link for more information.
