Notices – Tuesday 12 November

There are major benefits in terms of your health and cycling, rather than coming to school in a car, has a positive impact on the environment. Please think about your own and other’s safety by wearing a helmet, having lights now that it is dark earlier and follow the rules of the road – it is illegal to ride on the pavement and extremely dangerous for pedestrians. This also applies to the school site – please do not ride your bicycle on site, you should get off at the gate and walk in with your cycle and walk to the gate before cycling when you leave in the afternoon.

Sixth Form Notices – Monday 11 November

BULLETIN.JPG

MESSAGES FOR YEAR 12 STUDENTS

Supervised Study
All students who are doing 3 subjects now have two Supervised Study slots on their timetables. These are being re-sent by email over the next couple of days and you are all reminded that these sessions are compulsory – not optional.
You should arrive with work to do and if necessary should refer to: https://stb6th.edublogs.org/students/tips-for-nn-contact/

Attendance
Letters will now be going home for attendance issues. Please contact Mrs Garetty about any absence via phone or email. Reminder that failure to have completed a drop form, but not going to lessons, will create an attendance issue.

EPQ
All students wishing to apply to do an EPQ should come to a half-hour meeting at 12.15 on Wednesday 13th November in the Foyer. Please register with your tutor first then come to the meeting.

MESSAGES FOR YEAR 13 STUDENTS

UCAS deadline was last Tuesday (5th November)

46 Applications have already been sent to UCAS and 29 students have already received offers from Universities. A further 16 have been received and are being processed by the Sixth Form team. They will be sent to UCAS over the next few days

The process you should be following is:
1. update your UCAS form to include any AS grades and to reflect any subjects that you have dropped or picked up since July.
2. complete your personal statement, ask someone at home to check it and then share it via Unifrog with your Tutors. I have asked Tutors to turn away any personal statements that are sent to them via email or on paper. The Unifrog tool is much the most efficient way of managing this process and given the number of students involved, it is important that everyone sticks to this.
3. once your Tutor has approved your personal statement via Unifrog, you should save a copy and then cut and paste it into your UCAS Form.
4. once you have shared shortlists with your Tutor and finalised your choices (up to 5 for everything apart from Medicine) you should enter your final choices on to your UCAS form.
5. complete the blog form at http://stb6th.edublogs.org/ucas/586-2/. This guides you through some final checks and provides us with some information that will help us to check the form. It also places you in a queue so it means that we can manage Forms in the order in which they were sent to us.
6. press pay and send from the UCAS site.
7. keep an eye on email. If there are errors, your form will be bounced back to you for corrections. Please respond quickly. You only need to pay once!

Your predicted grades were shared with you in your reports in July. Unless you have heard otherwise from teachers, these will be pasted by us into your form. Your references are currently being finalised. You are not required to do anything in relation to your reference other than to ensure that the Tutor Reference (written by your Y12 Tutor) reflects the full range of your skills/activities.

“The Student Tracker” study

Havas People are asking students to participate in “The Student Tracker” study, which they are carrying out on behalf of a number of UK universities. It looks at Sixth Form students’ future plans, what options they’re considering, and their decision-making process. The outcomes of the research will inform universities communications with students.

If you’re 16 or over, and in sixth form or equivalent, this is your chance to make your voice heard with UK universities. Students who have participated previously in this survey found it very helpful:

“I thought it was insightful and make me think about other post school options that I have. It also made me think about all aspects go university and what it entails to its full extent”. (Year 12)

“I really enjoyed taking this survey! I guess because I was made to consider why I chose my course and look at how I made that choice. I am also now going to look more closely at different sources of information about unis so I can make the best application for me.” (Year 12)

“Insightful and thought provoking questions enabling me to realise how little/much I knew about different aspects with university applications.” (Year 13)

They welcome students who are considering university and/or employment. If you take part, you will enter a prize draw to win £500 in Amazon vouchers. The survey takes around 15 minutes to complete.

You can take part by following this link, or copying and pasting it into your web browser: https://app.keysurvey.co.uk/f/1440178/79c4/

The survey is completely confidential – your answers won’t be seen by anyone outside the research team. They will never report any responses at an individual level.

From West Berkshire Council – Market Street closure and bus routes

You may be aware from the traffic notices that have been placed around town that Market Street in Newbury will be closed from the 28th October for up to 5 weeks. This is a 24 hour/7 day a week closure. The extent of this closure will be from the junction of Mayors Lane to the junction of the access road into the council offices (off the mini roundabout).

This will affect Kennections services coming into Newbury town centre from the south of Newbury. Kennections 2 and 3 will be diverted over this period and Kennections 4 and 6 will not serve Newbury Railway Station for the duration. The final details of the arrangements are available at this link on the West Berkshire Council’s website – https://info.westberks.gov.uk/transportchanges.

I wanted to highlight that this will affect the morning buses dropping students off and ask if you could make them aware of changes to services that we will be in place during this time.

The morning route 3 service coming from in Hungerford & Kintbury will serve St George’s Avenue and Craven Road as normal (last scheduled stop Bleinham Road) then go down Rockingham Road and exit to Bartholomew Street via Enborne Road, head past Fair Close to St Johns Roundabout, it will serve Newbury Railway Station Stop W and then exit Link Road and continue on the normal route via St Johns roundabout. The service will not serve Newbury Wharf until it returns from Wash Common. Customers who board at Newbury Wharf should catch the service from outside Newbury Railway Station (St Nicholas School side).

The 4, & 6 services from the North of Newbury will depart Newbury Wharf exit onto the A339 Sainsbury’s roundabout by Bear Lane, then head down the A339 and along A343 (St Johns Road) to St Johns roundabout and continue on scheduled routes. They will not serve Cheap Street, Market Street, Bartholomew Street or Fair Close. Students can board the bus at the Wharf or at the temporary stop on the westbound side of the A343 (St Johns Road).

Notices will be going up at the relevant stops around the Town Centre later in the week. Any further updates to bus services will posted here – https://info.westberks.gov.uk/transportchanges
